Event Description

Dr. Karla Diaz Davalos died on July 27, 2013 at the age of 31, after a hard-fought battle with Burkitt's lymphoma.  During her first year of fellowship in the Department of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, she and her husband, Tony, were blessed with the news of her pregnancy. Being a devoted physician, Dr. Davalos continued to work tirelessly throughout her pregnancy and unknown illness at the time, which was later diagnosed as lymphoma. A miracle sent from above, her adoring baby boy, Pablo, was born on December 23, 2012, perfectly healthy. Seven months later, she lost the fight and left this world with a smile on her face as a final gesture to her family, as if to let them know she was okay. Karla was an extraordinary young woman who touched many lives, and she will be forever loved.

We invite you to celebrate her life with the inaugural Laugh for Lymphoma benefiting the Halo House Foundation on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Laugh Out Loud! Comedy Club.  We will bring Texas’ finest comedians together for an evening of laughs, dining, and a toasting of our guest of honor, lymphoma survivor, Katie Russell. Our headliner for the evening is Aaron Aryanpur, with Alex “Koolaid” Ansel featuring and Blair Thompson hosting. All proceeds from Laughs for Lymphoma benefit the Halo House Foundation, and their mission of making life easier for people with lymphoma.

Guests at the event will enjoy dinner catered by Paloma Blanca, open bar, and hilarious entertainment by our line-up of comedians. We encourage you to support the Halo House Foundation and make plans to join us at our inaugural Laughs for Lymphoma. Prior to her passing, Karla was involved in the early planning of this event and hand-picked this organization as the charity to support.

The Halo House Foundation is the only 501(c)3 organization focused specifically on providing fully furnished housing at a very low cost to blood cancer patients while they are undergoing active treatment for their cancer at the Texas Medical Center, and Karla wanted to help others in her situation. Every year, San Antonio leukemia or lymphoma patients travel to the Texas Medical Center for potentially life-saving treatments to cure their cancer. They come because care is unavailable locally, or because their local treatments have failed.

Thank you in advance for your support of Laugh for Lymphoma benefiting the Halo House Foundation and its commitment of making life easier for people with lymphoma. We look forward to sharing this lively evening with you and your guests!
